About Visakhapatnam

 

Visakhapatnam is a coastal, port city, often called "The Jewel of the East Coast", situated in  the of Andhra Pradesh, located on the eastern shore of India, nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and facing the Bay of Bengal to the east.
It is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh with an area of 550 km², it is primarily an industrial city, apart from being a port city.According to the history, the city was named after the god of Valor-Vishakha. It was a part of the Kalinga Kingdom, under Ashoka's rule in 260 B.C. It passed on later to the Andhra Kings of Vengi. After this Pallava,     
Chola and Ganga dynasties ruled the city.In the 15th century, Vishakhapatnam became a part of the Vijayanagar Empire.

Dosa, rice, vegetables, dal and mixed curry make up the main local diet. And Pesarattu, a dosa having a filling of Upma made with semolina and onions is also very popular with the locals. Other local delicacies are shrimp pickle, fish curry and prawn curry. Spicy Rasam, and Telugu mulligatanni or pepper water soup (known in the West as Mulligatawny) are still more favourites. Normally, food served in Andhra is vegetarian and is on the hot and spicy side. Our mango pickle, called Aavakkai, is world famous.
