About Sonamarg

Sonamarg, which means ' meadow of gold ' has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. the Sindh meanders along here and abounds with trout and mahseer, snow trout can be caught in the main river. In late April when Sonamarg is open for road transport, the visitors can have access to snow which is furnished all over like a white carpet. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier a major attraction during the summer months. However, there is need for some stricter regulation to save the environment of the area from over tourism. Litters such as plastic bottles, etc. are strewn all over along the track.

The climate of Sonamarg is very bracing; but the rainfall is frequent though not heavy, except for two or three days at a time in July and August with fine spell in between. From Sonamarg, trekking routes lead to the Himalayan lakes of Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gangabal Lake and Gadsar Lake.

Eating Out

Banquet of Kashmiri cuisine: Wazwan is an art unto itself. A multi-course meal, here you will have the choice of at least 15-30 courses, traditionally shared from large metal plate called the trami. The tramis arrive, heaped with rice, quartered by seekh kababs, methi korma, tabak maaz, safed murg, zafrani murg and the first few courses. Yogurt and chutney are served separately in small earthen pots. Yes, there's more. As you complete each trami, it will be removed, and a new one brought in, until the dinner has run its course or your stomach has. Tabakh maaz, rista, rogan josh, daniwal korma, aab gosht, marchwangan korma and gushtaba are bound to be a part of your trami as these are considered must. More of a ceremony than a meal, several days of preparation go into the Wazwan, with the Waza (chief chef) personally supervising each dish. Sounds staggering.

Sonmarg is not a shopping destination. Warm tunics ‘pherans’, shawls, wicker-work and scatter-rugs ‘namdahs’ can be bought here.
