About Periyar

 

Situated within the confines of the Western Ghats in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Periyar National Park Kerala and Tiger Reserve is one of the most captivating wildlife parks in the world. Elephant in Periyar is another major attraction.It eventually resulted in the adjoining forests being granted protection by the Maharaja of Travancore. Post-1975 Periyar finds itself in the enviable position of being a national park as well as a protected tiger reserve.Periyar (also known as Thekkady) is a park where one can witness playful elephants, whose population is currently around 800. Elephant in Periyar make excellent wildlife watching. The population of tigers is also increasing appreciably. The terrain ranges from hilly to flat grassland areas at the edges of the lakes. The vegetation is of moist deciduous type. Elephant in Periyar remain the key attraction.

Eating Out  
 

They are glad to cater for any special diets if needed and also provide for vegetarian options too. In fact all meals are discussed with the guests.They also cater for (lunch parties) non-resident guests but only on a prior arrangement basis. They also offer cooking classes for resident guests who are interested in learning the local cuisine. The cuisine is predominantly Syrian Christian in par with Keralan touch and tradition. Most of the dishes are centered on fish, farm vegetables and fruits, chicken and occasionally other meats, supplemented with rice and rice based local breads like appam,   string hoppers, etc. Some of the specialties are smashed tapioca with kerala style fish curry (of course with less  chilly!), Nellikka arishtam (vine prepared with Gooseberry in honey or in jaggery), Passion fruit syrup/squash are always available as an option.

Periyar being a land of spices, the most sought after items for tourists visiting the sanctuary is a wide variety of exotic spices. The slopes of the Western Ghats at Periyar grow a number of spices like pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, mace and anise. The spice-scented air at Periyar welcomes tourists and tempts them to shop for some excellent quality fresh spices that are grown in abundance here.Kumily, located nearby, is a famous shopping centre and spice trade centre. A wide variety of spices and handicrafts are also available at the shops in Kumily.While shopping in Periyar, you can also buy T-shirts with exclusive Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary motifs of tigers and elephants. These can serve as excellent souvenirs for your loved ones back home.
