About Gulmarg

Gulmarg (translation: "Meadow of Flowers") is a town, a hill station, a popular skiing destination and a notified area committee in Baramula district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The town is within the Himalayas and is within miles of the Line of Control between India and Pakistan.
Gulmarg is easily accessible from Srinagar or Srinagar Airport (SXR), the capital of Kashmir, in under 2 hours by car or bus. Just 1 hour on the way is the town of Tangmarg, a key tourist attraction and also a main destination for skiers riding down from Gulmarg during the winter months. From Tangmarg, the Gulmarg plateau is just 30 minutes travel. Gulmarg has around 40 hotels ranging from extremely budget accommodation in private huts to hotels that are of a similar standard to a western Bed & Breakfast. When hotels say 5 star expect similar standards to the aforementioned bed and breakfast or motel. The peak season starts with the snowfall in December and last

Eating Out

Banquet of Kashmiri cuisine: Wazwan is an art unto itself. A multi-course meal, here you will have the choice of at least 15-30 courses, traditionally shared from large metal plate called the trami. The tramis arrive, heaped with rice, quartered by seekh kababs, methi korma, tabak maaz, safed murg, zafrani murg and the first few courses. Yogurt and chutney are served separately in small earthen pots. Yes, there's more. As you complete each trami, it will be removed, and a new one brought in, until the dinner has run its course or your stomach has. Tabakh maaz, rista, rogan josh, daniwal korma, aab gosht, marchwangan korma and gushtaba are bound to be a part of your trami as these are considered must. More of a ceremony than a meal, several days of preparation go into the Wazwan, with the Waza (chief chef) personally supervising each dish. Sounds staggering? You have to see it in front of you believe it.

Shoping

Shopping in Kashmir is both fascinating and annoying. Gulmarg is great for a range of shopping, as is Srinagar, however Dal Lake probably edges toward the annoying end of the scale.

Grocery Shopping Gulmarg The market area of Gulmarg provides all the basics for survival. Loads of tiny shops with fantastically stacked goods crammed into every nook and cranny sell everything from breakfast cereal to detergent. There are several fruit and vegie vendors as well. The mandarins are particularly good and help fight off the scurvy!
