About Dehradun


Dehradun, the city, headquarters of the district is visited by a large number of tourist every year, many of them en-route to Mussoorie. The climate of the city is temperate. Even during summer, it is not so warm at Dehra Dun as in the district south of it. The Forest Research Institute which is world famous for its research work in forestry and is the only institution of its kind in Asia is situated here. Besides, headquarters of the important establishment like the Oil and Natural Commission; Survey of India etc., the Military Academy are also located here. The other places of importance is the Robber's cave, situated at a distance of about 8 kms from Dehra Dun. The Gurudwara built by Guru Ram Raj during the reign of Aurangzeb in the Dhamanwala locality o the town is a religious place of eminence.

Eating Out  

Dehradun is famous among visitors for its delicious cuisine. People use large amount of milk and milk products in their foods, generally local people love to eat vegetarian food yet non vegetarian food is also famous among them. Dehraduni food contains lots of nutrition as many dishes are prepared from lentils, Singodi, Kandalee ka Saag, Kumaoni Raita, Gahat ki Dal, Aloo ke Gutke, Sani hui Muli, Nimbu, Singodi, Kaafli, Gulgula, and Kulath Phanu are the famous dishes among locals. In dessert people like to eat Jhangora ki Kheer, Bal mithai and famous Arsa.


Uttarakhand has a tradition of handicrafts. Dehradun being the capital of the state has good market places. Like all the Himalayan regions, Uttarakhand is also rich in forests. Abundance of wood has been the reason of exquisite woodcrafts prepared by the local artisans. Check out artifacts and utilities fashioned out of wood, bamboo and cane while shopping in Dehradun.Woolen garments mostly made by the Tibetan women are also popular items for shopping in Dehradun. Warm and beautiful sweaters, cardigans, shawls at dirt-cheap prices are available at the markets round the year.Local painting and ornaments may also feature in your shopping list in Dehradun.There are many places for shopping in Dehradun. But Paltan Bazaar area, lined with various shops is the most popular haunt. You may also hang out at Rajpur Road and Ashley Hall areas.
